Full Day Trip in Pai

If you have read Pai and the Night Market already, it’s time to explore some of the full day trips in and around Pai.

Start with the free trips that were offered from our resort “Montis” to the Yunnan Chinese Village and Wat Nam Hu

Yunnan Chinese Village is a well-known Chinese village called Suntichol (Thai name) which is located 4.5 kilometers from Pai and admission is free (I like free)…

The village is famous for horseback riding, wellness, shooting games and Chinese souvenirs
I’m sure that you can spend at least half day to enjoy the activities here.

See something that you can’t see that often in Thailand, for example try the Yunnan swing.

The Chinese horseback riding around the village, don’t worry –you’re safe.

They are also very famous for the Chinese cuisine, especially rice with pork (Khao Kha Moo in Thai), black chicken curry, and delicious Chinese noodles.

It’s beautiful in December – nice weather!
We really enjoyed walking around this village, it’s a good stop in Pai.

Next stop Wat Nam Hu
Wat Nam Hu is a place of Phra Un Muaeng statue which is about 500 years old, this statue has a hollow head, the topknot can close-open and has water flowing all the time.

As we believe the water from the Buddha head will bring good luck, Thai tourists worship the spirit water and take it home.

The temple provides sample bottles for this purpose in front of the main hall, it’s a miracle for you to stop for good luck to go!!!

Those are the free trips we got from the Montis Resort with their excusive van!  But for something else in Pai we have to find our own vehicle.

So we went to the Pai walking street (the Night market) to rent a car but there were no cars available for us to rent (It’s December, you better reserve it in advance). So we got….

A scooter!!! It’s kind of cheap at 200 baht (about $6.00 / 24hours)!

It’s not bad, we drove safe and very careful…
Let’s start at the Pai World War II Memorial Bridge

This bridge is establish in World War II ( 1942 ) when Japan was powerful in Thailand (I felt like I was at River Kwai Bridge in Kanchanaburi, but this bridge is smaller!)

Japanese soldiers used Pai as a transportation route from Chiang Mai to Burma. (The local labor 0.5 – 1.5 Baht per day) This bridge was used to transport troops and supplies to Burma much like the famous River Kwai bridge in Kanchanaburi province.

Then actual World War II Bridge was destroyed and later rebuilt…

There are so many shops nearby the bridge as well…

On the way back to town, there is a road sign to Pai Canyon on your right.
Pai Canyon or Kong Lan is another interesting tourist attraction in Pai. The steep cliff has been eroded creating the 20 meter-deep valley amidst the scenic settings of the red hill of dry dipterocarp and pine forest.

Northern Language:
Kong means small local road and Lan means lizard.

It is best to visit this place in early morning or late evening, because in the afternoon the area could be extremely hot.

It’s kind of too small and way too high for me to stand!

Last stop today “Coffee in Love”, this coffee shop is not far from the city – it’s an interesting stop because before I came to visit Pai, the Coffee in Love shop was a symbol of Pai for me.

If you google pictures about Pai, most tourists will have a picture with this shop in the backdrop. This shop is also in the tour program for Pai which I wondered why they put the coffee shop in tour package…

What makes this shop so famous? Do they make the best coffee? Do they have special ingredients? Or… why???
But finally we were there, Coffee in Love.

First stop you will see that they are busy in front of the shop by the letters of “Coffee in Love”.

It’s a little weird when it’s not that busy in the shop (more busy in front with the sign as I mentioned)…
The only thing that I could feel when I got there, it’s really nice decoration and the view is really great. Well let’s try some coffee (we are in Coffee’s shop!)
For the coffee and tea, it’s about 50-70 baht. Some cakes are about 50-65 baht as well.

I’m ok with the coffee (I’m not a coffee’s fan), the strawberry cheesecake is fresh and creamy (good!)
A little sip of hot coffee in the morning with a nice background, and a little quiet, would be a dream for us at the Coffee in Love shop…But well, it’s a good stop!

You can adjust or change the program on your own. There are so many resorts that offer different activities during your stay, but it’s ok if you would like to follow our steps!

There is one more (big) stop in Pai that really impressed us… “Tham Lod” or Lod Cave but we can’t ride our scooter up there, it’s about 40 minutes away by van, please continue reading in Tham Lod in Pai (coming soon).
