JJ Market, Bangkok

JJ Market (Chatuchak or Jatujak Market, Bangkok)

We say in Thai that this market has everything from a tooth pick to a Battle ship!
Because it’s Not Just a huge market, this is a SUPER HUGE market! You can find everything that you can imagine here!

But I’s only on weekends… why? Think about this, the market is in heart of City and it covers over 35 acres with more than 5,000 stalls. You will see how many people will come to (just) work here, and think about another 200,000 visitors each day…That’s why we can’t open this market everyday as the first issue will be “TRAFFIC” (more traffic)!!!

For tourists, I would recommend for you to take the BTS (the sky train) to Mo Chit(N8), the last or first station of Sukhumvit Line. Take exit #1 (the best exit – I think!)

Then keep right, get down from the station, and you will see nice park in your right, you can turn right for a short cut through the park!

Or you can take the MRT (underground train) to Kamphaeng Phet Station, and take exit #2, you will get out right in the middle of JJ Market. I think I like this exit!!!

For your information, if you need any help there are “MEETING POINT” in the middle of the market with ATM machines and police officers who can assist you in the market. Also note the warning signs about Pickpockets… It’s a big crowd with lots of people and sometimes this gives a great opportunity for some not so nice people to take advantage.

From experience, the pickpockets will take only cash, cell phone, iPod or something that they can turn to be money quickly. If they got your passport, it might be found in some trash can nearby. So be familiar with LOST AND FOUND station which is at the Meeting Point as well…
The market opens about 8.00am – 6.00pm but the best time to visit this market is 10am – 3pm, I’m sure that most of the stalls will be open and ready by that time.

There are so many narrow ways to get in, and after that you will find your way to shop around. It’s so easy to keep walking back and forward in the same area, and never go anyplace!!! So you should get a free map inside the market!!!

And remember that they accept Thai baht only, but don’t worry there are a hundred ATM machines, and exchange office in the middle area (The Meeting Point).

The market offers a wide variety of products including household items, clothing, Thai handicrafts, religious artifacts, collectibles, foods, and live animals.

Thailand T-shirts are the most popular gifts for others and yourself! You can find all the local Thai T-shirts with pictures about Thailand, or I Love Thailand, or I love anything t-shirt (I love Pattaya, I love Hard Rock, etc.), and sizes for all ages. The price should be about 80-350 baht for local t-shirt, depends on the quality of cotton and graphics / picture!

Some stuff for Marijuana…

Or get some new jeans at 199 baht or $7!!!! Because there are not only t-shirts, but you’ll find other fashions all here….

Or the colorful wool dolls, just 50 baht or $1.75…

The wooden mask at 200 baht or just $7…

All carving from small to actual size!

Variety of food… make sure that your tummy is ready to try something new…!

Did I mentioned that it’s very HOT HOT HOT at JJ market??? It is!!! So try the COCONUT Ice-cream. This is a very famous & popular desert (you can see by the long queue…)

First, you order an ice cream, then the boy will hand you a plastic cup of fresh coconut juice (very clear color water, but taste it, it’s real coconut juice!), then you can pick your choice of toppings.

The ice cream is rich, soft, creamy and yummy. The coconut meat and peanuts add extra texture, if these are your topping choices. I’m sure that it will make you want to come back to JJ market!

Popsicle at 4 baht

JJ market is very famous about pet shops (specially for Thai) , they have so many kinds of animals.

The most popular are dogs but more than that, sometimes I don’t know what that animal is…?

Other than that you will find some nice flowers and plants…For tourists, there are a number of onsite companies who will send purchases abroad as well.

Fresh fruit cart…

Live fish!!!

Grilled squid…

So cute dogs…

Herb snack…

Wood shop…

Painting shop…

Or Thai Massage at 250 baht/hour

But if you are burning out in JJ Market as it’s an outdoor market, step in the JJ Mall where the air conditioners help to cool you down. The JJ mall has almost the same kind of products as the JJ Market but just not too many. And this mall opens every day, 10am – 8pm.

One more choice in the JJ market area, try the night market called the “Railway Night Market or Ta Lad Nat Rod Fi”

This market opens about 6pm-11pm on Friday- Sunday night. This market is a (too) long walk from JJ market but you can take a taxi (about 50++ baht from Mo Chit Station).

It’s really nice area to walk even you don’t want to shop. This market is famous about Thai old style furniture but you will feel like you are in the festival market.

Well, time for shopping, time for fun!
