The secret Cave in Geoje Island, South Korea

The cave that creates Instagram Posts Go Viral in South Korea!

The cave “GeunPo”, 근포동굴 is located South of Geoje Island next to Myeongsa Beach, it’s almost an hour to drive from Okpo or Gohyeon (Geoje Downtown). And it might take more than 3hrs drive from Busan!

GeunPo cave includes 3 small caves next to each other, the biggest one is 3 meters wide and 3 meters high, about 20 meters long.

The cave is believed to be built by the Japanese in the 1940s. They used Koreans to dig these kinds of caves along the South coast of Korea to use them as war shelters or arsenals. There are over 700 caves like this on Jeju island!!!

See it’s not just the caves but it’s historic caves!!!

If you google the Korean word “근포동굴” or , “근포땅굴”  the pictures of the cave will pop up!

Most Korean’s like to take “shadow” pictures here, they don’t focus on the face but their characters.

The couple who asked me to take their pictures in the cave showed me pictures on Instagram that they wanted to pose just like that…!

So you will see many couples dress up or come with some props like hats/umbrella, etc…

We went there on Saturday (A long holiday during Thanksgiving in South Korea), it was packed!

I was giving up when I saw the lines for pictures, but Tim said We can’ just give up!!!

So we lined up for the cave in the middle (middle size of those 3 caves), it was a shorter line.

And… we were only foreigners there!

I think the bigger one is more popular (#1), they have some kind of a little reflection pond inside the cave…
No one cares about the 3rd cave, it’s too small…so no line for that cave!

We took more than 30 mins to wait in line, each couple would take about 5 mins to take pictures, some would spend up to 10 minutes to set up their perfect picture!!!

*The First Cave would have to wait more than an hour!!!

Setting up a camera stand and selfie remote would take a long time and it’s a little shameful to see the line behind waiting for you and watching you with many eyeballs…

We just took a 2-minute video…they were surprised when it’s our turn and we just walked-in and walked-out very fast!

*How we took our pictures in Geoje Cave…

Right next to the cave, there is a photo frame – where you can pose like being silly or being romantic here!

There are 2 small streets to drive down to the cave, we took a fast turn to a very small and steep turn – it was scary!

So make sure you take the main street to drive down to the cave, they have a parking area but it’s rocky.

There are some volunteers around the area to help with the flow of traffic. This is free, no admission!

The most popular times are during sunrise and sunset, the sunlight makes pictures more beautiful…

There is also a fishing village and restaurant just down the road.

Mangsan peak is one of the best hikes in Geoje Island. Myeongsan beach is about 5-10 mins walk from this cave, it’s a small famous hill for hydrangea during June-July.
